UN Conference to Ban Nuclear Weapons Continues

forWebsite

On Thursday 15th June, the United Nations will reconvene in New York to begin negotiations on banning the most destructive weapon humanity has ever created: the thermonuclear bomb.

Supported by the vast majority of the world’s people and governments, including every nation in Africa, South America and almost all of Asia, this conference marks the greatest opportunity in a generation to bring our species back from the brink of self-destruction.

As Satsuko Thurlow has said, “This is a truly historic moment for the entire world. For those of us who survived atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is a very joyous occasion. We have been waiting so long for this day to come”.

However, despite the grave danger we face, the British Government is currently refusing to play any part in the negotiations. This is in spite of a legal obligation under the Non-Proliferation Treaty to reduce, and eventually abolish, its nuclear weapons arsenal.

If this conference is to have any practical effect, the nuclear-armed nations, including Britain, must be involved.

We’re asking the public to immediately contact their MP and request that they urge the Government to change its mind. Your MP’s details can be found here.

March Update

Following the election of Donald Trump as American President, we have a produced a special edition of the Merseyside C.N.D. newsletter.
Co-Chair Peter Wilson explores the possible global ramifications of a nuclear weapons policy led by someone who has declared “let there be an arms race“.
