Hiroshima & Nagasaki Day 2020

We would like to invite all CND member and supporters to join us as we gather to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Please note that social distancing guidelines must be followed at all times.

10:15: Gather at  LCVS, 151 Dale Street, (near the Birkenhead tunnel )

We will then proceed, via William Brown Street, with banners and placards to St. John’s Garden

11:00: Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Anna Rothery, will lay a wreath in memory of all the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and make a short speech about the atomic bombings. This will be followed by a minute’s silence.

There will then be poems, survivors’ testimonies and music from members and friends, followed by the Peace Prayer.

Everyone is welcome to join us in proceeding to the front steps of St. George’s Hall for quiet discussion and reflection.

UK attachements to nuclear power – a military romance?

Join CND for a discussion with Professor Andy Stirling and Dr Phil Johnstone, in conversation with CND Chair Dave Webb, about the connections between the UK’s nuclear weapons programme and nuclear power. Hosted by CND General Secretary Kate Hudson.

Andy Stirling is a Professor of Science and Technology Policy at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, and has served as an adviser to the EC, UK and other governments across a range of issues in the politics of science, technology and innovation.

Dr Phil Johnstone is a Research Fellow at the Science Policy Research Unit, (SPRU), University of Sussex. A member of the Sussex Energy Group since 2013, Phil has researched and published on a number of topics related to energy transformations, and has a long-standing interest in nuclear power policy.

CND Peace Cranes Challenge

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children.

As part of our work in commemorating the anniversary, and telling the stories of those who lived through the bombings, today we are launching the CND Peace Crane challenge – will you take part?

We’re asking supporters to get sponsored by family and friends to fold origami peace cranes, to raise money to help our campaign against nuclear weapons so the world never has to see another Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Our suggested target is 75 cranes – one for each year since the bomb was dropped – but you can of course set your own target instead.

Everyone can take part, and you don’t need any previous experience of origami – we have a variety of guides available to help you. And by taking the challenge, you can help us continue to campaign for a nuclear-free world. So if you’d like to help, then sign up for CND’s Peace Crane challenge today.

Disarming Doomsday Webinar

Our next online webinar will take place at 2pm next Saturday, 4 July, when Dr Becky Alexis-Martin of Manchester Metropolitan University will be in conversation with CND Vice-Chair Tom Unterrainer, discussing the human impact of nuclear weapons since Hiroshima, with Kate Hudson as host.
